New Civic Initiative Launches to Champion Ethical AI and Economic Belonging for American Workers
HYATTSVILLE, MD | June 2025 — As artificial intelligence accelerates across every sector of the U.S. economy, a new civic venture is stepping forward to ask—and help answer—a critical question: How do we ensure the AI era serves all of us, not just the few?
Future in Common, a public-interest organization at the intersection of technology, equity, and governance, officially launches today alongside its flagship initiative:
The United States of AI: An Ethical Policy Platform for American Workers.
This open-access platform offers a bold, people-first roadmap for navigating AI’s disruption to work, democracy, and shared prosperity. With over 30 original policy proposals, the series aims to center the voices of workers, educators, families, and local leaders in national AI conversations too often dominated by corporate or academic elites.
“This moment demands more than just regulation or innovation—it demands imagination,” said Deion Lemelle, policy strategist and founder of Future in Common. “The United States of AI is our contribution to a future where every worker belongs, every voice counts, and technology deepens—not erodes—democracy.”
The launch comes amid growing calls from lawmakers, technologists, and labor advocates for responsive public frameworks to address AI’s rapid advance. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s June 2025 testimony, AI-related GDP gains may begin materializing within 12–24 months—further underscoring the urgency for equitable preparation.
The United States of AI spans topics from workforce reskilling and reproductive rights to AI alignment, gun safety, and democratic infrastructure. Each proposal is accompanied by a narrative post designed for accessibility and cultural resonance.
The project is freely available at usai.futureincommon.org and is designed for use by policymakers, educators, journalists, and the general public. A book edition will be released this summer, with an audiobook and civic training tools to follow.
